What is a school councillor? by Mahir Imran, Year 4
As a school councillor it is important to help our school by thinking of ways to make things even better.
We work together to come up with ideas for events to make our school an exciting place to learn. We talk to our classes and ask them how we could improve our school. We have meetings and assemblies to share the ideas and decisions.
School councillors need to set a good example by following the school rules and showing respect for everyone. They also have to be good listeners.

Extra food at lunchtime by Sameeha Ahmed, Year 1
Some of the year 1 children were finding that they wanted more food at lunchtime as they are growing up now and can eat more. I spoke to Mrs Martin and we met with the Kitchen staff.
They said that they didn’t want to give out too much food as they didn’t want it to be wasted. So they wanted the children to ask for more if they wanted it.
I spoke to the year 1 children and told them it was ok to ask for more if they wanted it. They must not be shy. I also said that they must not waste food if they ask for it.
The year 1 children are happy.

Eco-Warriors By Safaa Noor Qureshi, year 3 and Seher Imran, year 5
Over the past few weeks we have been learning about being Eco-Warriors and saving energy. Some of us are helping school by turning off lights and trying to reduce the bill for the school. Teachers and children who are reading this will be shocked to know that your school has to pay nearly £9000 a year! Can you believe that! As a school councillor it is our responsibility to help save energy. Every day more and more people are wasting, especially in winter when temperatures are going down and it is getting darker day by day. We know that people need lights, but you need to turn them off when you’re finished. Do you want to be taught in the dark? If not, save electricity!

Wow Travel Tracker By Camy and Khadijah
We have been doing a project called Wow Travel Tracker. We’re very sure that by now you will have heard about it. If you haven’t here’s what it is…..
We are trying to encourage children to walk to school. Each child in the school tells us how they have got to school each day. At the end of the month, if we have walked to school at least once each month we get a lovely badge! Not just one badge, lots of badges! We know when we are getting a badge because the program tells us we have 100%. When you get your badge it is shaped like a foot to show you have been walking. Plus it has a picture on it (different each month!). If you come by car or bus you don’t get a badge.
Children who live too far from school to walk are encouraged to park away from school and then walk in (at least 5 mins!) This project encourages us to get healthy and to make the road outside school a safer place to be.

Secretaries of the school By Linda Lukwanda, year 5 and Sanya Zaman, year 6
We make sure all the information discussed throughout the meetings is not forgotten as we write every bit of it about what happens during the meetings of the school council (Meeting minutes) and keep it safe in our very own folders. What usually happens during the meetings is we talk about the issues in school and find out ways to make them better. We also bring in our own ideas from each of our classes. Would you want to go to a school you hated? We don’t think so! That’s why the school council includes and entitles everyone to their own opinions. We make sure that everyone is happy and that the school gets better and better each day. We feel happy about being school councillors because we get to come and give our ideas.

Road safety campaign
After only a few weeks in, the new School Councillors are already having an impact on school life.
They have taken part in a week long road safety campaign organised by the Police and Road Safety Team. They decided to launch the campaign in our area as we have a large number of traffic incidents. Our School councillors supported the adults outside the school gates, giving information to parents and making drivers aware of how their driving and parking can keep the children in our school safe.
We are committed to keeping the children in our school safe and plan to run road awareness campaigns every year.
We will be following the progress of our campaign by inviting the Road Safety Team into school to deliver pedestrian training and safety sessions to all our children in the next few months.
